Description of Parent Data Set: It is in a vector digital data structure, taken from the 1994 U.S. Census Bureau's TIGER/Line files for New Mexico. The 1994 TIGER/Line files are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the Census TIGER data base. The source software used was ARC/INFO 7.0.3.
Intended use of data: These data are typically used as base data for other coverages, and should be used at scales of 1:500,000 and smaller. The data are intended for use as a general reference to the location of the major roads.
Related spatial and tabular data sets: Rio Puerco Watershed Basin Boundary (wshed)
Accurate against Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS), FIPS Publication 6-4, and FIPS-55 at the 100% level for the codes and base names. The remaining attribute information has been examined but has not been fully tested for accuracy.
Accuracy of these digital data (if not digitally revised), is based upon the use of source graphics which are compiled to meet National Map Accuracy Standards. NMAS horizontal accuracy requires that at least 90 percent of points tested are within 1/50th of an inch of the true position. Comparison to the graphic source is used as control to asses digital positional accuracy. Cartographic offsets may be present on the graphic source, due to scale and legibilty constraints. For more information on National Map Accuracy Standards, refer to USGS Fact Sheet FS-078-96 (September 1997), or visit <URL:http://mapping.usgs.gov/mac/isb/pubs/factsheets/fs07896.html>.
Roads containing the letters "hwy," "ighway," "oute," "Rt," "ndian," "ervice," "vc," "tate," "orest," "I-," and "US" were selected from the data set and used to create a new coverage. Individual roads that were well known to Rio Puerco project members were selected from the original data set (with the help of 1:24,000 and 1:100,000 scale USGS topographic maps and 1:100,000 scale Bureau of Land Management topographic maps) and added to the new coverage.
