Description:
Abstract:
This data set contains the railroads that are within the perimeter of the Rio Puerco watershed basin. Some parts of some of the portrayed features lie outside of the Rio Puerco basin; those parts of the features external to the basin are not portrayed. Processing software was ARC/INFO 7.1.1.

Description of Parent Data Set: It is in a vector digital data structure, taken from the 1994 U.S. Census Bureau's TIGER/Line files for New Mexico. The 1994 TIGER/Line files are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the Census TIGER data base. The source software used was ARC/INFO 7.0.3.

Purpose:
This data set was created to digitally represent the railroads within the Rio Puerco basin.

Intended use of data: These data are typically used as base data for other coverages, and should be used at scales of 1:500,000 and smaller. The data are intended for use as a general reference to the location of the railroads.

Supplemental_Information:
Please refer to the Census Bureau TIGER/Line documentation, available from the U.S. Census Bureau or online at <URL:http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/>, for more information.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Attribute accuracy for this data set is assumed to be 100%.

Accurate against Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS), FIPS Publication 6-4, and FIPS-55 at the 100% level for the codes and base names. The remaining attribute information has been examined but has not been fully tested for accuracy.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Attributes and processing steps were consistent for the entire data set.
Completeness_Report:
Data completeness of the TIGER/Line files reflects the contents of the Census TIGER data base at the time the TIGER/Line files (1994 version) were created.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The information present in these files is provided for the purposes of statistical analysis and census operations only. Coordinates in the TIGER/Line files have six implied decimal places, but the positional accuracy of these coordinates is not as great as the six decimal places suggest. The positional accuracy varies with the source materials used, but generally the information is no better than the established National Map Accuracy standards for 1:100,000-scale maps from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); thus it is NOT suitable for high-precision measurement applications such as engineering problems, property transfers, or other uses that might require highly accurate measurements of the earth's surface. The USGS 1:100,000-scale maps meet national map accuracy standards and use coordinates defined by the North American Datum, 1983. For the contiguous 48 States, the cartographic fidelity of most of the 1995 TIGER/Line files, in areas outside the 1980 census Geographic Base File/Dual Independent Map Encoding (GBF/DIME) file coverage and selected other large metropolitan areas, compare favorably with the USGS 1:100,000-scale maps.

Accuracy of these digital data (if not digitally revised), is based upon the use of source graphics which are compiled to meet National Map Accuracy Standards. NMAS horizontal accuracy requires that at least 90 percent of points tested are within 1/50th of an inch of the true position. Comparison to the graphic source is used as control to asses digital positional accuracy. Cartographic offsets may be present on the graphic source, due to scale and legibilty constraints. For more information on National Map Accuracy Standards, refer to USGS Fact Sheet FS-078-96 (September 1997), or visit <URL:http://mapping.usgs.gov/mac/isb/pubs/factsheets/fs07896.html>.

Process_Description:
The data sets for the eight New Mexico counties in the Rio Puerco basin were copied from cd-rom media (RGIS) onto a Sun Unix server, where they were processed with ARC/INFO 7.1.1. The data sets were appended together, clipped with the perimeter of the Rio Puerco watershed basin (wshed), and reprojected from geographic coordinates into Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates.

One section of railroads known to Rio Puerco project members was not included in the TIGER/Line files. This railroad was added to the coverage by manually digitizing line segments on-screen. Bands 4 and 5 of a July 1989, Landsat TM image were used as reference for the location of the railroad being added. This image, which had previously been registered to a vector road coverage using an affine transformation, has an estimated positional accuracy of 60m (30m of intrinsic resolution and about 30m of image registration error.)
