Description:
Abstract:
This data set contains the miscellaneous transportation features (pipelines and powerlines only) that are within the perimeter of the Rio Puerco watershed basin. Processing software was ARC/INFO 7.1.1.
Purpose:
This data set was created to digitally represent a coverage of all pipelines and powerlines in the Rio Puerco basin.

Intended use of data: These data are typically used as base data for other coverages, and should be used at scales of 1:500,000 and smaller. The data are intended for use as a general reference to the location of the pipelines and powerlines.

Supplemental_Information:
The 100,000-scale DLG files are derived from USGS topographic maps published as 30- x 60-minute quadrangles at 1:100,000-scale. Bureau of Land Management editions of 1:100,000-scale maps or archival compilation materials are used when the USGS maps are not available.

The 1:100,000-scale Digital Line Graph (DLG) data files are digital representations of cartographic information. Data files of topographic and planimetric map features are derived from cartographic source materials using manual and automated digitizing methods.

Attribute codes are used to describe the physical and cultural characteristics of DLG node, line, and area elements. The codes are based on cartographic features symbolized on source maps. Each DLG element has one or more attribute codes composed of a three-digit major code and a four-digit minor code.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The DLG data do not carry quantified accuracy statements. Attribute accuracy for this data set is assumed to be 100%.

DLG attribute codes are checked by software against a table of valid codes to ensure that each attribute in a file is valid for the category and element type to which it is assigned. Validating the codes for correct application is currently a manual process involving the correlation of formatted listings with proof plots and graphic displays.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Attributes and processing steps were consistent for the entire data set.
Completeness_Report:
Data completeness for unrevised digital files reflects the content of the source graphic. Features may have been eliminated or generalized on the source graphic, due to scale and legibility constraints.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The data are either manually digitized using equipment with a resolution of 0.001 inch and an absolute accuracy of from 0.003 to 0.005 inch, or are scanned on an automatic device with a resolution of 0.0013 inch (30 points per millimeter). The positional accuracy of the data and completeness of the file are checked by visually comparing proof plots with the original stable-base source material. These proof plots are generated using pen or electrostatic plotters with a resolution of 0.001 inch and an absolute accuracy of from 0.003 to 0.005 inch.

Accuracy of these digital data (if not digitally revised), is based upon the use of source graphics which are compiled to meet National Map Accuracy Standards. NMAS horizontal accuracy requires that at least 90 percent of points tested are within 1/50th of an inch of the true position. Comparison to the graphic source is used as control to asses digital positional accuracy. Cartographic offsets may be present on the graphic source, due to scale and legibilty constraints. For more information on National Map Accuracy Standards, refer to USGS Fact Sheet FS-078-96 (September 1997), or visit <URL:http://mapping.usgs.gov/mac/isb/pubs/factsheets/fs07896.html>.

Process_Description:
The data sets for the eight counties in the Rio Puerco basin were downloaded onto a Sun Unix server, where they were processed with ARC/INFO 7.1.1. The data sets were appended together and clipped with the perimeter of the Rio Puerco watershed basin (wshed).

Features other than pipelines and powerlines were permanently removed from the data set.
