Description of Parent Data Set: Status polygons were scanned from 1:100,000 scale mylar peelcoats into Line Trace 4X (LT4X) software. The files were then edited, vectorized, and converted to the Map Overlay and Statistical System (MOSS) software. They were then imported into Arc/Info using the Arc "MOSSARC" command. Individual 100K ownership coverages were created and these were then merged into a single statewide ownership coverage and projected to Lambert Conformal Conic with a central meridian of 106 degrees. Further editing was done in 1997 to add polygons smaller than 160 acres which had been removed during the LT4X editing. This was accomplished by screen digitizing the polygons using 1:24,000 ownership data as background coverages. This 1:24,000 scale data was provided by the BLM district offices.
Intended use of data: These data are to be used as base reference to the 1:100,000 scale BLM Land Status Maps. These data are intended for use as a general reference to the extent and boundaries of these maps.
This coverage portrays the current status of what is commonly known as "surface ownership" in New Mexico. More accurately stated, the coverage displays land parcels which are attribute coded to the organization that is responsible for managing the surface of the land for that parcel. The coverage is not intended to depict the entity that holds title to the land, nor is it intended to depict subsurface rights.
The land ownership status records contained in this data set are not the BLM's official records of title. To obtain the official records, consult the Master Title Plats and Historical Indices available through the Public Room at the BLM New Mexico State Office which is located at 1474 Rodeo Road in Santa Fe, NM.
