Description:
Abstract:
This data set contains boundaries for the New Mexico Counties that have any portion within the Rio Puerco watershed. The boundary lines of some counties extend outside of the basin perimeter, and the portions of the boundaries outside of the basin are represented. Processing software was ARC/INFO 7.1.1.

Description of Parent Data Set: It is in a vector digital data structure, digitized from a USGS 1:500,000 scale mylar of the state of New Mexico. The source software used was ARC/INFO 5.0.1 and the conversion software ARC/INFO 7.0.3.

Purpose:
This data set was created to digitally represent New Mexico's County Boundaries.

Intended use of data: These data are typically used as base data for other coverages, and should be used at scales of 1:500,000 and smaller. The data are intended for use as a general reference to the extent and boundaries of the New Mexico counties.

Supplemental_Information:
Data completeness reflect the content of the source graphic. Only County boundaries were extracted from the source graphic. The data contains all lines representing New Mexico County boundaries and the names of each county.

Accuracy of these digital data (if not digitally revised), is based upon the use of source graphics which are compiled to meet National Map Accuracy Standards. NMAS horizontal accuracy requires that at least 90 percent of points tested are within 1/50th of an inch of the true position. Comparison to the graphic source is used as control to asses digital positional accuracy. Cartographic offsets may be present on the graphic source, due to scale and legibilty constraints. Process_Description:
The data set was copied from cd-rom media (RGIS 1996) onto a Sun Unix server, where it was processed with ARC/INFO 7.1.1. The boundary of any county that 'passed through' the perimeter of the Rio Puerco basin was selected (using the reselect command with the passthru parameter). This selected set of counties was written out to a new coverage, and reprojected from the Lambert Conformal Conic projection into Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates.
