Cliff of Punta de la Mesa Sandstone about four miles north of Casa Salazar,
looking north, 1906.
Retake of Stanton 791; 8/20/98. Note the dramatic improvement in grass cover and
the lack of a gully in the area of bare-ground visible in the right foreground
of Stanton's view. This area today is within 500 meters of several houses that
appear to be long uninhabited. It is likely that the area was heavily grazed by
domestic animals while people were living here (severe overgrazing has been
documented near settlements in New Mexico as early as 1846) and grass cover
(primarily Alkali (?) Sacaton) has improved since the people moved away.
