Mesas north of town of Cabezon and west-northwest of San Luiz, 1911. Note
arroyos and development of "Badlands"-type topography.
Retake of Lee 697; 6/19/98. Looking north from a point on the road between San
Luis and Cabezon. No trace of the road or the arroyo visible in 1911 could be
found in 1998. Areas of small, dark shrubs (Snakeweed) in middle of view may
presently occupy areas that were disturbed by erosion in 1911. Snakeweed is
commonly found on disturbed areas and is commonly taken as an indicator of
overgrazed land. A few juniper trees have sprouted up below the base of the
talus in the distance.
