Photos from a Sed Trap at Bear Lake

Digital image of clear plastic accumulation tube from a shallow sediment trap (30' below the water surface) deployed in Bear Lake from July 14, 1998 to September 18, 1999. White layers are composed of granules of teflon dispensed every 30 days. Note that sediment accumulation was extremely slow from August 1998 to the beginning of April 1999. An intense algal bloom occurred during April 1999 that triggered massive carbonate precipitation (mostly aragonite) during the summer. Chlorophyll levels in the surface waters of Bear Lake during April and May were the highest they have been since monthly measurements began in 1980.
